Dealing With Seasonal Affective Disorder

SAD, also known as the “Winter Blues”, stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder. It is a form of depression triggered by changes in daylight and weather as it gets colder, and the days get shorter.

There are many theories such as with the changes in seasons, comes changes in hormones, such as serotonin and melatonin, which affect our sleep and mood and energy levels. An article from Everyday Health titled '14 Ways to Ease Seasonal Depression' states that one way to help fight SAD is to add Aromatherapy to your treatment plan.

"A review published in 2020, indicated that essential oils could potentially help lessen symptoms."

Although there is limited evidence to draw conclusions, essential oils could potentially influence the area of the brain that is responsible for controlling moods and the body’s internal clock that influences sleep and appetite, Dr. Kalayjian says.

Why not try pairing the use of essential oils with another soothing activity such as a warm bath, perhaps with Stress-less Bath and Body Oil or Love Story Bath and Body Oil to prepare for a good night’s sleep. Or simply diffuse an uplifting blend such as Celebration Pure Essential Oil Blend or Confident and Calm Pure Essential Oil Blend. Another great way to help awaken your senses (without the side side effects of caffeine) is to apply our Brain Power Roll On to your wrists and temples when needed during the day.

Fragrance Expert and Author of Nose Dive, Catherine Haley Epstein says, “Scent is the fastest hit to the limbic system... an even more direct route to this part of the brain than sight. That’s why we like particular smells; they instantly connect us to happy recollections. Scent is the quickest possible way to feel better.”
